At Shelton Horsemanship, we help horses and riders build trust in one another by instilling confidence, and clear communication through practical horsemanship. Located in Eastern North Carolina, we specialize in colt starting, problem horse training, ranch horse development, and rider education using proven principles influenced by the Lyons method. Every horse is trained as an individual with the goal of becoming a willing, dependable partner both in and out of the arena.

Hi, I'm Scott Shelton, founder of Shelton Horsemanship.
My approach to horse training has been shaped by two influences: the discipline and expectations of the working cow horse, and a career spent serving as a U.S. Army Special Forces Soldier. Both taught me that lasting success comes from clear communication, consistency, patience, and trust—not force or shortcuts.
After farming for several years I had the opportunity to head west and was introduced to what a positive impact horses have on working cows. Since then I have committed myself to studying horsemanship and earned my Lyons Legacy Certification and Accreditation, training under the internationally respected Lyons method. That education reinforced what I already believed: every horse learns differently, and every training program should build confidence before asking for performance.
My background in cow horses continues to influence everything I do. Whether I'm starting a colt, helping a horse overcome behavioral challenges, or preparing one for ranch work, reining foundations, cow work, or roping, my goal is always the same—to develop a willing, dependable partner that is responsive, confident, and enjoyable to ride.
At Shelton Horsemanship, I intentionally keep a limited number of horses in training so each receives individual attention and a clear development plan. I also believe the owner is an essential part of the process. Through hands-on clinics and continued support, I help riders understand what their horse has learned so they can continue building that partnership long after the horse returns home.

Shelton Horsemanship is proud to be Lyons Legacy Certified and Accredited, a distinction earned through professional training based on the horsemanship principles developed by John Lyons, widely known as "America's Most Trusted Horseman," and continued through the Lyons Legacy program led by Josh Lyons.
For decades, the Lyons family has helped shape modern horsemanship by teaching horse owners and professional trainers how to communicate with horses through timing, feel, consistency, and clear expectations rather than fear or intimidation. Their methods have influenced countless riders across disciplines, from trail horses and family horses to ranch, performance, and competition horses.
Earning Lyons Legacy Certification and Accreditation requires intensive hands-on instruction, practical evaluations, and demonstrated proficiency in applying these proven training principles. As a certified trainer, Scott Shelton is committed to carrying that legacy forward by helping horses become willing, dependable partners while equipping owners with the knowledge and confidence to continue their horse's education long after formal training has ended.

Every dependable horse begins with a solid foundation.
Our colt starting program introduces young horses to groundwork, saddling, mounting, riding, and basic responsiveness in a calm, confidence-building environment. The emphasis is on creating a willing horse that understands pressure, develops trust, and is prepared for future disciplines.

Behavior problems often result from confusion, fear, inconsistency, or gaps in foundation rather than a horse simply being "bad."
Shelton Horsemanship works with horses experiencing issues such as trailer loading difficulties, lack of respect, anxiety, bucking, rearing, poor ground manners, confidence problems, and other behavioral challenges. Every training plan begins by identifying the cause before developing practical solutions that improve communication between horse and owner.

Whether your goals involve ranch riding, ranch versatility, reining foundations, cow work, ranch roping, or simply creating a dependable everyday riding horse, our program focuses on developing responsive horses that understand their job while remaining willing partners.
Training progresses according to the horse's understanding rather than a fixed timeline, producing horses that are confident, capable, and enjoyable to ride.

Our mission is not simply to train horses—it is to equip horse owners with the knowledge and confidence to continue developing their horses long after they leave our program.
